Environmental Awareness

The first step in defending yourself is awareness. KNOW YOUR ENVIRONMENT.

  • Observe your surroundings.

  • Become a student of people and the environment.

  • Pay attention to where you parked your car.

  • Be prepared with your keys out to enter your car or home.

  • Is it going to be safe to get to when you come out of a theater late?

  • Will anyone be around?

  • What do the people around you look like?

  • What type of attention are you receiving?

  • Are you going to walk right next to that dark doorway where someone could be waiting for you?

  • What about when you are diving? Do you leave space to get away?

levels of Awareness

The Rings of Life correspond in an interesting way to your levels of awareness. Being aware of your surroundings sounds obvious, Yet I'm sure there are times when you find yourself lost in a your own little world as you walk or drive around town. This is what I call “Auto-Pilot”. I described the following levels of awareness very similarly for years. Then when teaching a small group of police officers and firemen I was introduced to the following system that I like to adopt:

  Are You A Victim?

WHITE - Being in a WHITE state of awareness is like walking around in a blur. You cannot see five feet in front of your face. Lost in your own little world, you leave your defense system on hold and make yourself a prime target for a criminal. Try to train yourself to be aware of this state and snap yourself out of it when it happens.

YELLOW - Except when facing an imminent threat, you train yourself to move about in a YELLOW level of awareness. When you think YELLOW, think caution. You casually observe everything around you and note anything that is out of the ordinary. This is not a state of paranoia, only heightened awareness.

RED - RED indicates danger. Maybe you have observed something you see as suspicious and decide to act or someone jumps out and grabs you by the arm. Appropriate action may be walking the other way or striking the offender in the eyes. Whatever the case, your decisions make the most impact in this stage. The RED level of awareness is where you should be in a self-defense confrontation.

BLACK - This is the worst level. At this point, fear has taken over and you have frozen. You can no longer act or react in an appropriate manner. How do we avoid black? - Confidence in your technique and a strong survival mindset.

The less aware you are, the more likely you will fall victim.

Be smart.  Stay alert - stay alive.
