If you’re a victim of domestic violence or abuse, you may be afraid to seek help out in fear of your partner would do if he/she found out. However, there are many things you can do to protect yourself when leaving. Start by creating a safety plan ahead of time. Enlist the help of a trusted friend or family member to plan exactly where to go and how to get away fast when your abuser attacks.

Shelters and other programs offer a lot information on personal security matters, ranging from what to pack in an "emergency get-away kit to how to go into hiding. Gather this good and useful information as soon as you feel this may be an option. It is always better to avoid a violent attack than to try to survive one. Unfortunately, hiding doesn't always work, and you will not always have someone else there to protect you every minute of the day and night.
